Natural drug leads as novel DPP-IV inhibitors targeting the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract
Background / Aim: The prevalence of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) who are using incretin based therapeutics has increased in a large scale in past few years. Although the incretin based pharmaceuticals are more efficacious, several studies have shown that prolonged usage of currently used incretin based therapeutic agents might cause several undesirable adverse effects. Therefore, there is a necessity of developing novel incretin based therapeutics from natural sources with minimal/no adverse effects. The current review emphasizes the incretin based therapies in the management of T2DM, highlighting the importance of DPP-IV inhibitors from plant sources.
Methods: The relevant literature was collected form data sources as PubMed, Web of Science and Google Scholar. The references of articles were also examined to obtain further information.
Results: A collection of plants has been screened for it’s antidiabetic potential through DPP-IV inhibitory potential either in vivo or in vitro. In some cases, the compounds which exert potent DPP-IV inhibitory action have been identified and their structures have been deduced.
Conclusion: The present review reports on natural DPP-IV inhibitors through the assessment of plant profile used in the management of diabetes mellitus and forcuses a new pathway for the researches in the field to developed new molecules from natural sources with DPP-IV inhibitory activity.
